Overview

Ultrasonic homogenizers, commonly referred to as "sonicators," disrupt tissues and cells through cavitation and ultrasonic waves. Their core mechanism involves a rapidly vibrating tip that induces the rapid formation and collapse of bubbles in the surrounding solution—a process known as cavitation. This phenomenon generates shear forces and shock waves, which effectively tear apart cells and particles.

▋Key Applications

Sonicators excel at breaking down suspended cells and subcellular structures. Beyond this primary use, they serve multiple purposes, including:

Creating stable emulsions by uniformly mixing immiscible liquids;

Dispersing nanoparticles to prevent agglomeration and maintain suspension homogeneity;

Reducing particle size in suspensions to optimize distribution.

▋Working Principle

Based on the cavitation effect of ultrasonic waves in the liquid, the transducer will generate high intensity shear force in the liquid at the top of the tool head through the amplitude-variable rod to form high-frequency alternating water pressure, which will cause the cavity to expand and explode to break the cells. In addition, the use of ultrasonic propagation in the liquid to produce a violent perturbation effect, so that the particles produce a large acceleration, thus colliding with each other or collision with the wall to achieve the effect of crushing, emulsification and separation.
